Hetian jade (和田玉, hé tián yù) is nephrite — the jade that shaped Chinese civilisation for over 7,000 years. Before jadeite arrived from Myanmar in the 18th century, Hetian nephrite was the only jade known to the Chinese imperial court. It remains deeply revered today for its cultural weight, tactile warmth, and the ethereal quality of its finest specimens.
The finest grade — "mutton fat" (羊脂白玉) — is a dense, creamy white with a particular inner glow, as though the stone is lit from within. Hetian river material (河料) from Xinjiang's Yurungkash River commands exceptional premiums; mountain material offers beauty at more accessible prices.
